The best bakeries in London
Treat yourself at Kensington's best bakeries
There's nothing better than a slice of rich chocolate cake, a flaky pastry or the simple delight of some freshly baked bread. Perfect for a spot of holiday indulgence (or even a delicious snack squeezed in between meetings!), Kensington's fantastic array of bakeries are guaranteed to delight your taste buds.
There are plenty to choose from, especially in South Kensington, which is also where you'll find some of the city's best museums, including the exciting Science Museum. So, it's easy to pop into one of these bakeries for a quick treat in between browsing the exhibitions, which makes a perfect break for peckish little ones.
Serving up delicious cupcakes, brownies, cakes and more, Hummingbird Bakery ranks among the top places to treat yourself in London. In fact, so successful is this bakery that it has several shops across the city, a celebrity clientele and even its own cookbooks for sale. So, you could try to recreate your favourite cakes back home!
Its classic vanilla cupcakes, which come in pretty pastel colours, couldn't be more delicious, but if you're keen to try something a little more unusual, there are plenty of options. You will find the bakery at 47 Old Brompton Road, just around the corner from the Science and Natural History museums.
Also in South Kensington, Gail's Artisan Bakery is a must-visit for bread lovers. Located at 45 Thurloe Street, it sells a huge range of delicious artisan breads, as well as pastries and cakes perfect for a breakfast or lunch treat.
Caramelised garlic bread, and potato and rosemary sourdough are just a few examples of the unusual and tempting breads you can buy here. Why not pick up one for a picnic lunch if the weather is nice?
On 27 Kensington Church Street, meanwhile, you will find a nationwide favourite: Patisserie Valerie. This chain of bakeries has become a common sight in UK cities in recent years, having first opened in Soho in the 1920s by Madam Valerie, who was determined to bring continental patisserie to England.
This is the perfect place to come to for delicious (and very large!) flaky almond croissants, decadent cakes and fine teas.
